WordPress Campus Connect Toledo

On Wednesday, January 28, the Toledo School of Art hosted a WordPress event, WordPress Campus Connect Toledo, which was attended by more than 80 students from the school who came to learn about WordPress from industry professionals.

Since it was a venue that happened to be nearby, I decided to attend, because my good friend Ángel Zinsel was the organizer of the event. As they say, where there’s trust… well, Ángel told me, “Since you’re coming, and one of the topics we need to discuss and explain to the kids, who better than you to talk to them about the WordPress Community?” So, we went for it, and I’m truly grateful. I always love giving a talk in Toledo! The venues where you end up speaking are always iconic. In this case, it was like being inside a chapel with tapestries, high ceilings, and so on—a real experience, honestly.

I remember when, at the invitation of the Toledo Meetup, I was at the Alcázar de Toledo library giving a talk on local SEO… well, at events like this, it’s not only rewarding to share knowledge, but also a pleasure to be able to attend and speak at such iconic venues.

We started the day with an introduction by Amparo, the person in charge of coordinating the event on behalf of the Toledo School of Art. She was a wonderful host and incredibly friendly—just like the entire team of teachers and staff at the school. They were all very grateful for our attendance and extremely helpful in every way. Ángel Zinsel kicked off the event and then handed the floor over to me so I could explain to the students what WordPress is and what the WordPress community is all about.

This time there was also a talk by my good friend Ana Cirujano, whom I was really looking forward to seeing “in person” again. Well, Ana’s talk was, as always, one of a kind—you always learn something from her! This time she talked about fonts, how to choose the best font for your website, and why that choice matters. Like I said… you always learn something from her; she’s amazing!

Afterward, there was a short break organized by the event organizers. WordPress remains committed to this type of event, and despite limited budgets, the WordPress Foundation makes significant efforts to support these events around the world. Personally, as a Program Supporter in the WordPress Community, I had already conducted several interviews with applicants looking to host these types of events, including Ángel, but this is the first one I’ve been able to attend in person, and I consider it a great initiative on the part of WordPress and its Foundation. Here , as always , Jose Ángel, a member of the WordPress Community in Griñón, who was also attending as a participant, rolled up his sleeves and helped set up the refreshments.

To wrap up the event, Álvaro Gómez from Automattic led a workshop on how to easily set up a website, so that students could easily create their own portfolios using WordPress.

The event has come to a close, and as always, it was a pleasure to see everyone again, catch up, and spend the day together.

Here are some photos from the event—some taken by me and others by Ana
